Mark your calendars this year, ladies, cause it’s bigger and better than ever. Our little town is all grown up and this year’s PRIDE will rival any other city– guaranteed.

Festivities start next week: Thursday June 3rd through Sunday June 6th. You like music? You got it. 5k Running and Yoga? Sure thing. Movie Screenings? You betcha! Celebrities and block parties? Yup. And of course a big gay parade.

Here are some highlights for the big day on Saturday…

PRIDE 5k
Register online for this Saturday run at 9am that starts at the Long Center. Betcha can’t spot your favorite Front Runner while you’re at it!

PRIDE Expo & Festival
From 10am to 6pm, check out games, entertainment, music (and even a Pet Parade) at the Long Center. Open to kids and adults alike!

PRIDE Theatre
Check out “Connect” a series of four short plays at the Rollins Theatre starting at Noon. Yes, there will be nudity. Yes, you should check it out. Your general admission Pride Pass will get you in the door.

PRIDE Parade
Saturday night at 8:30pm, join the crowd downtown from South 1st up to 4th, between Congress and Guadalupe. And don’t forget to bring plenty of spirit!

After the parade, get ready to party. You need to get your general admission Pride Pass to enter, but once you’re in, you’re IN! Entertainment includes, Blake Lewis, Frenchie Davis and Jayden Grey.

Hate in your own backyard? Do something about it.

Hate Crimes in Austin? Unbelievable, but yes. This past Friday night, two gay men who play for the Shady Ladies team with Softball Austin were leaving Oilcan Harry’s when they were attacked by four men in the City Hall parking garage. Wearing their Shady Ladies jerseys, Matt Morgan and Emmanuel Winston were followed from the bar and verbally harassed before being physically assaulted. See the news footage here.

My initial reaction… Really??? No way. Not in Austin. This doesn’t happen here!

But it did. And now it’s time to do something about it. The community has organized swiftly, so this Saturday take part in the “Austin March Against Hate” at 2pm to take the same walk that Matt and Emmanuel took that night. Everyone will gather at OCH starting at 2PM on Saturday, February 27, 2010 and then march from OCH to City Hall at 3PM.

If you play in any gay sports league, wear your jersey. If you are part of any LGBT organization, show your pride and dress accordingly. Bring your signs. Bring your voice. Bring your solidarity.

Her HRC – A National Night of Celebrating for Women

Join thousands of women across the country for a national night of celebration! On one night, Sunday January 17^th, in 35 cities across the country, women will be gathering in support of the LGBT community to mix, mingle, and have fun! Texas is representing well with Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio all hosting their own Her HRC events!

Austin’s Her HRC will be held at one of our favorite local restaurants, El Sol y La Luna, on Sunday January 17^th at 7 pm. The theme for our Austin celebration will be – “Viva Equality” HRC’s first official National Celebration for Women, Spanish style.

You must buy tickets before hand to attend and they are going fast – as of today there are less than a hundred left! The purchase price is $10/person and your payment comes with a membership to the HRC.

Hors d’oeuvres will be served, and a special menu with $5 apps will be available. $3 Beers, Happy Hour Prices on Drinks!

Faith, Love and Peace at MCC Austin

For many women in our community, reconciling a lesbian life with a spiritual faith can be difficult without the right support, especially when many religious communities are not fully accepting (if at all).

MCC Austin at Freedom Oaks offers a very different experience. It’s a chapter of the 30-year old international Metropolitan Community Church, a human rights Christian organization that specifically serves the LGBT community to provide unique and meaningful experiences of faith.

If you don’t believe they cater to our community, consider who’s leading the Austin congregation: Rev. Karen Thompson. A graduate of the Austin Presbyterian Seminary, Karen was the first “out” lesbian approved as a Candidate for Ministry in Mission Presbytery. Pretty amazing stuff. But that wasn’t enough. Karen had a calling to serve her LGBT sisters and brothers, and left to pursue ordination in the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches. Karen and her partner live and thrive in Austin with their three children– serving as examples of how reconciliation between faith and homosexuality can be a very real, attainable achievement.

And MCC Austin gives back to the Austin LGBT community regularly, generously contributing to organzations like OutYouth, Waterloo Counseling, Austin Pride Build (Habitat for Humanity), aGLIFF and SoulForce.

But you’ll have to experience the amazing energy and connectedness of this community yourself. MCC Austin at Freedom Oaks offers traditional worship services Sunday at 9am and 11am, with additional programs throughout the week. Also, the annual MCC Austin Christmas Choir Concert takes place this Sunday, 12/13 from 7:30 – 9pm, which features special readings and music presented by the Sanctuary Choir, Chime Choir and various soloists.

Run, jog, or skip…just don’t be left out!

Strap on your running shoes, girls, for the biggest gay run ever on the Town Lake trail! Tuesday 12/1 marks World AIDS Day, a special day dedicated to raising international awareness of HIV and AIDS. And at 5:30pm that day, the Capital CIty Front Runners will be hosting a special group run in partnership with AIDS Services of Austin.

Don’t be left out! Meet at the stretching area under the Mopac Bridge at 5:30 pm and follow the running group over to City Hall. The official slogan for this event is “Running together – Supporting each other” and as such, the pace will be relaxed, allowing all ability levels to join in.

Once at City Hall, a few positive and supportive words will be spoken for all of those who continue to live and fight with HIV and AIDS. In addition to raising AIDS awareness, this event is also about bringing awareness to a gay lifestyle that is both healthy and social, helping to break stereotypes that tend to define us. Following the ceremony, everyone will run on back over to the Mopac Bridge.

In solidarity with AIDS awareness, each runner is encouraged to bring a red flower and to carry a red flashing safety light. If you do not have a light, they will try to provide one for most people. Don’t forget to wear red, also!

But running isn’t the only fun to be had. Rusty Spurs will be hosting the after party at 7pm with food and drinks.
