This is an ALL WOMEN’S flag football league, so no having to worry about those ball hoggin’ boys and silly co-ed rules – it’s just all girls, all fun, all the time!

Here’s the scoop:  Games are every Monday night, anywhere from 6:30 pm to 9 pm, at the fields on Robert E. Lee off Barton Springs Rd. (right across the street from Zilker Park).  There are usually 4 – 5 teams in the league and the season lasts for 10 weeks (or 8 games)!

The games are fun and light-hearted, but there is definitely still some great competition out there!  So, ladies gather your friends – more importantly, step up and be a CAPTAIN and get a team together.  It’s easy, just find 8 people or more, get them to hand over about $40 a piece and register online right here: http://www.capitalcityflagfootball.com/

No practicing necessary, just show up on Monday nights with your coolers and folding chairs and get ready for a great time.  If you don’t necessarily have a group of friends in mind to play with, just use LezGoAustin’s Facebook page to put yourself out there as a free agent and have some team pick you up!  There should be plenty of room for everyone to play!

Anyway, put the Colts and Saints away until next season because boy do we have a new team for you to root for!  The Austin Outlaws is Austin’s own all-women professional football team, and they are kicking off their 10th season on Saturday, April 10th!  They will be facing off with the Houston Power at Westlake HS Chaparral Stadium!

The Outlaws are coming off a 2009 season in which they clenched the Southwest Division title with a 7 – 1 record!  They are determined to capture the title again this season as they face some pretty fierce competition from division rivals such as the Houston team, the Lonestar Mustangs from Ft. Worth, and former power-houses Oklahoma City Lightning and the New Orleans Blaze.  The Outlaws will also host the league’s first international team – the Aguilas Regias of Mexico!  Pretty sweet!

Did I also mention that the women of the Outlaws have to fund themselves??  It’s an extremely impressive task to hold full time jobs off the field and find the time to fundraise to keep the league alive! Take that men’s professional football – you’ve got it made easy!

This year the Outlaws are chanting “Ten Years of Tuff!” as their battle cry – and they want all of us to be cheering right behind them!  We’ve got this season’s schedule right here for you, so print it out and put it on your fridge:

Lesbians of Austin – let’s do our part and support these hard-working women – Gooooo Outlaws!

Since there is really no LGBT league in Austin, our lesbian community has pretty much created it’s own by taking over the city’s women’s recreational flag football division.  Three teams - No Clue, The Shockers, and The Flag Hags – have already signed up for the season – BUT two more teams are needed!!

Here are the details if you are interested in getting a team together and registering for the spring season:

There will be 5 teams in the divison.  Games start the week of March 22nd and are played on Monday nights.  Team registration costs $385 for the season.  Teams generally consist of around 12 people…but you can have as many as you want!  The games take place at the fields on Robert E. Lee off of Barton Springs Rd (next to Zilker Park).

Several LezGoers attended!

The rain and chilly air didn’t keep almost 50 people from attending Austin’s first World AIDS Day 5K Fun Run on Tuesday evening. Sponsored and organized by the Capital City Front Runners, Austin’s very own gay and lesbian running group, it was a touching event to participate in. The group started around sunset at the Mopac bridge for the 3-mile run, stopping midway through at City Hall to participate in a ceremony. KXAN News was there to cover the event.

Runners donned both red flowers and red lights in remembrance of those around the world— and in Central Texas—that suffer from HIV/AIDS. The lights and flowers were also symbols encouraging greater awareness and prevention of the epidemic. According to the United Nations, roughly 33 million people in the world live with HIV. Agency spokesman Micah King of AIDS Services of Austin estimates that nearly 6,000 people in Central Texas have the disease. “World AIDS Day is an important date for remembering those we’ve lost in the epidemic and reflecting on where we are in preventing the disease and treating those who suffer from it,” King said.

This event was only one of many in honor of World AIDS Day. And although the day is done, you can still do your part to support the community. The AIDS Services of Austin is a great organization that respond to the HIV needs of the Austin area by providing services that enhance the health and well-being of individuals and the community in the face of an evolving epidemic. Also, coming up this spring is the annual Hill Country Ride for AIDS on April 24, 2010. Get on your bike and ride either 10, 45, 65 or 100 miles to raise money for the cause! www.hillcountryride.org

If you haven’t heard of the group before, they are an LGBT running group open to all fitness levels from walkers, to runners that are just starting out to experienced marathoners.  Their focus is to provide support, encourage fitness, and network within the LGBT community.  The atmosphere is friendly, but I’m sure if you’re of the competitive type, you could find a little bit of that as well!

The group meets on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 5:30 pm, and Saturday mornings at 10 am on the North shore of Lady Bird Lake underneath the Mopaq bridge (by the water and stretching area).  Runners are encouraged to show up 15 minutes ahead of time to warm up and stretch!
